What to know when renting a car while in college.

Here are the precautions to take when you want to rent a car, whether for a short time or for an extended period of time.

Renting anything, especially a car as a college student can be a hassle. This is because you will be held responsible to pay if that rented car becomes damaged while in your possession.

Most car rental companies will have their renting clerk and the customer make an inspection and the customer just checks on paper whatever defects they found in the car before they leave. Then they will sign it and both the renting company and customer will get a copy of that document. If you want to be extra careful, you can use your phone's video camera and record while they're doing the initial walk through of the vehicle.

If the renting company does not do an inspection with you, then always inspect the car yourself for dents and dings and any other defects before taking it away. If you find anything, take a picture of it and tell the renting company about it.

Same goes for the amount of gas in the tank. Sometimes they don't give you a full tank. If you find this to be the case, take a picture of the gas gauge and show it to the renting company before you take the car.

If you were in a hurry and was no able to show the rental company the images of the defects you found before you took the car, you can use the EXIF data that is embedded in the photos you took as proof of when you took the picture. This data usually has the time you took the picture and even GPS coordinates of the place where you took the picture.

You can also upload the picture to an online storage like facebook immediately after you take it. This will help prove the time the picture was taken. However, for most cases, you will not need to go to such extent.

Taking these precautions will help you not be blamed for damages that you did not cause and this can cost you a lot of money for no reason.
