Cloud Computing Services: SaaS. PaaS, IaaS, and Managed Services.

Software as a Service (SaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) and Managed Services.

Cloud computing involve a set of different services delivered over the internet to the client, usually businesses that don't want to manage their infrastructure in-house.

Cloud computing will save many businesses on cost of buying and maintaining all this infrastructure and they only pay for the infrastructure and services they want to use and the cloud computing provider does all the maintenance.

The different types of services offered by cloud computing companies are:

Software as a Service (SaaS).

This service is when a client uses the software hosted at the providers remote site. This can be a single application to a suite of applications and some of them can be free and others paid.

Examples of free SaaS applications include Google Gmail and Microsoft Live. These are email applications that are hosted at the provider company's servers and are used for free by the client.

Examples of paid SaaS applications include Microsoft Office 365 which is hosted at Microsoft servers and the client pays a monthly fee to use the application.

The provider manages these applications themselves. They upgrade, make backups and ensure availability of these applications. Clients have no control of these applications.

Platform as a Service (PaaS)

The customers are allowed to use an integrated platform and this is the service they are provided. These platforms may include servers, operating systems and applications that the user needs to accomplish their tasks.

There are free and paid PaaS services. Examples of free PaaS platforms include Social application platforms like facebook, twitter and pininterest.

Paid PaaS include web hosting companies that allow you to host your websites in their platforms for a monthly fee.

The PaaS providers keep control and manages the platforms while the users are only allowed to use the platform for their own purposes as specified in their contract.

Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS).

These are things like servers, operating systems, databases and applications which are hosted at the providers remote location and clients pay to use them.

Unlike in PaaS, clients are responsible for the management of IaaS and will need to do things like software upgrades and patches.

Managed Services.

Managed Services providers provide IaaS but then manages part or all the infrastructure that they rent to the customer. This can be both hardware of software.

Clients pay for the use of managed services and the providers maintain the infrastructure by doing things like managing servers, operating systems and providing redundancy and recovery in case of disaster.
