Knowing your Credit score and FICO Score is very important because these are the scores most lenders (banks, credit cards, stores, credit unions) use to determine whether you are eligible for a loan or not.

A good Credit and FICO score is most desired and will help you get loans at a lower interest. This is because they know you are a lower risk borrower hence they don't want lots of interest on the funds borrowed to cover their risk of lending to you.

Steps to take to check your credit score are:

Step 1:

Log in to You will be asked to enter your name, address and Social security number to verify your identity.

Then you will get a free credit score from the three monitoring Agencies, Equifax, Experian and Transunion. Make sure to check the report and ensure there are no errors in your credit. This can indicate identity theft like someone using your account to buy stuff or open credit cards.

If you find any discrepancies, like credit cards opened under your name that you don't know about, you can file a dispute with the individual bureau (Equifax, Experian and Transunion) and also contact the credit card lender to verify how the credit card was opened under your name.

Step 2:

After getting your credit score from the website, you can also log in to, make a free account and then get two reports of your credit.

This report is more detailed and will explain to you what your measures are in the five main areas than comprise your credit score.

Step 3: FICO Score

Many banks and other lenders also use the FICO score in addition to the Credit score to determine how to lend to you.

You should therefore know what your FICO score is. A score of 720 and above is considered to be a good score by most lenders.
